SBGE275 and SBGC247 are two new limited edition Grand Seiko GMT sports watches with a winter look Capture the beauty of winter in Shinshu with two big and bold new GMT sports watches from Grand Seiko. We're just a few weeks into the new year, and it looks like Grand Seiko is going all out. Following the ice blue SBGA247 and SBHG295, there is a new interpretation of the birch, the SLGA009 Spring Drive. What follows is a rather impressive pair of sporty GMT models celebrating two specific anniversaries - for a number of reasons. Here are the Grand Seiko GMT 20th Anniversary SBGE275 and the Grand Seiko Chronograph 15th Anniversary SBGC247.
This new timepiece from Grand Seiko aims to capture the winter spirit and beauty of Shinshu, Japan, the region that produces Spring Drive and quartz watches. Inspired by the snowflakes surrounding Shinshu Watch Studio, we once again see Grand Seiko's ability to translate the beauty of nature into a watch through texture and color. The dials of both new models imitate the appearance of the rough texture of the ice and snow of the Hotaka Mountains. Grand Seiko has previously used these textures in the Shunbun SBGA413 and Taisetsu SBGA415, and although the colors are different, they are both part of the Heritage 4 Seasons collection.
GRAND SEIKO GMT 20th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGE275 Grand Seiko released its first GMT watch in 2002, and while it didn't feature Spring Drive technology, the brand introduced the new SBGE275 to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Its brushed and polished case is made of stainless steel and is quite large at 44mm in diameter and 14.9mm in height. The bezel features a sapphire two-tone white and blue insert with a 24-hour scale. It is water resistant to 200m thanks to its solid construction and screw-down crown.
The dial has a sloping inner flange that matches the bezel, again divided into white (day) and blue (night) sections. The dial has the aforementioned Ice White texture and color. As you'd expect from a Grand Seiko watch, the applied hour markers and hands are Zaratsu polished and faceted. The central GMT hand is black with a triangular tip. By the way, this is a true traveler's watch, which means the local hour hand can be adjusted in one-hour increments via the crown.
Grand Seiko's hybrid Spring Drive calibre 9R16 can be seen through the caseback. Structurally similar to 9R66, 9R16 is the more precise variant of the two. It runs with an accuracy of only +10/-10 seconds per month. Its 72-hour power reserve is conveniently indicated on the dial by a small hand at 8 o'clock. The last indication is the date, which is at 4 o'clock, in line with the crown.
The Grand Seiko GMT 20th Anniversary LE SBGE275 is worn on a brushed and polished stainless steel three-link bracelet. It has a triple folding clasp with push button release.

GRAND SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH 15th ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION SBGC247 Five years after Grand Seiko launched its first GMT watch, the first Spring Drive chronograph was launched. Since then, we've seen multiple iterations of the Spring Drive chronograph combined with a GMT indication, including the bold two-tone Spring Drive GMT Chronograph LE SBGC240.
The SBCG247 does have a more classic look as it adopts a sleeker design that has been seen in the past, with smooth bezels and no tachymeter scale. Other than that, the indications and layout are similar to all Spring Drive chronograph models, featuring Zaratsu polished hour markers and hands, central GMT hand, blue chronograph hand, power reserve display and date. On the outer edge, we see a sloping flange with a 60-second scale for a chronograph.
Powering the Grand Seiko Chronograph 15th Anniversary LE SBGC247 is the in-house movement 9R36. This is again a hybrid of mechanical and quartz technology, offering exceptional precision. The movement is regulated to run within +10/-10 seconds per month. It again provides true GMT functionality, where the local time is adjusted in one-hour increments, independent of other indications. In addition, the power reserve is up to 72 hours, driven by an oscillating weight decorated with 18K gold Grand Seiko lions.
There's one thing we need to get rid of the Spring Drive Chronograph, though: its crown and pushers are too big for our books. They make the already large case look a bit bulky and unbalanced, something the GS can definitely improve on. Luckily, the titanium case and bracelet save weight, so it's probably pretty decent to wear. The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph 15th Anniversary SBGC247 is a limited edition.
