As we grieve the loss of legendary coach Pat Summitt, we also fully recognize what a benevolent giant she truly was. She gave us so much, and its impossible not to feel a sense of irreplaceable loss with her death.Yet Summitt wouldnt want us to dwell on what breaks our hearts but rather on what heals them. There is a movement to name the NCAA womens basketball trophy in her honor, and you will no doubt see other suggestions of ways to commemorate Summitt. But a key component to what made Summitts influence so wide-ranging was the way she lived every day. You could do no better than to follow her lead. Thus, here are five things we all can try to do to keep Summitts spirit with us.1. Never stop learningSummitt started her coaching career at age 22 and had to learn on the fly how to be in charge and run a college basketball program. But even after shed won eight NCAA titles, she was still taking a critical look at everything she did and attempting to make it better.Summitt was never afraid to ask questions. She was not worried about protecting her ego when she asked them. She didnt assume if you were in a certain age group, for example, she couldnt learn anything from you. If she needed something explained in greater detail, she never hesitated to say that. And she was open to making changes based on things she learned. Summitt was innovative but also collaborative. Really wanting to improve means acknowledging youre not perfect, and Summitt could do that.Read -- or reread, as the case may be -- her books Reach for the Summit, Raise the Roof and Sum it Up, all co-written with Sally Jenkins. Watch documentaries such as Pat XO and A Cinderella Season: The Lady Vols Fight Back, which chronicled the 1996-97 season when Tennessee lost 10 games but won the NCAA title. These are all great resources to learn about Summitt, and see that she always kept learning herself.2. Dont forget to writeThis isnt aimed just at those youngsters who have grown up in a texting world. Longhand letter writing is becoming a lost art among all ages, and it really shouldnt be that way. There is something so personal and thoughtful about the written word when it really is written. Parts of peoples personalities are revealed in how they write and the way their handwriting looks. It means something extra because its a unique reflection of that individual. As weve seen shared on social media in recent days, Summitt was an all-time champion when it came to composing thank-you cards and notes of encouragement. It was yet another thing she was very diligent and disciplined about doing. That was partly thanks to her impeccable manners and partly her genuine desire to communicate and inspire. Those many notes and letters from Summitt are cherished by everyone who got one because its a lasting piece of her. So, even in our electronic society, its important to remember there are still times when nothing can replace putting pen to paper.3. Consider that you probably do have enough timeWere all guilty of this. Getting overwhelmed with tasks and saying, I just dont have time for this!Summitt didnt have any more hours in the day than the rest of us, but she made it seem like that because she was so efficient and focused. She delegated what she needed to, but basically she just figured out how to get it all done. Most of us will never be able to keep up with Summitts pace no matter how hard we try, so Im not saying we should attempt to match her. Rather, try to see where you might be wasting time (which includes the time spent saying, I dont have time for this!).Think of all the people in recent days who have shared the many ways Summitt had a direct impact on them. Then realize she found time for all of them despite being a very busy, highly successful person in the public eye.We likely can get more out of our time than we think we can. Summitt always did.4. Be generous with encouragement and gratitudeSome people reach the top of their profession and then are obsessed with keeping everyone else down. But Summitt didnt think like that.Sure, she wanted her Lady Vols to win every game. Nobody could compete any more fiercely than Summitt did. Yet she was also unmatched in giving people helpful advice and encouragement. She wanted everyone to maximize his or her potential no matter what that person did. Even if that meant he or she might beat Summitts team someday.Summitt understood that the good you do for people, the kindness you show, the lift you are willing to give -- those things ultimately do come back to you.Summitt had a personal magnetism, a compelling charisma, a graceful power that made it possible for just a few words from her to imbed in the psyche of people she met even briefly. Again, not many have that kind of aura. But we all have the capacity to be encouraging, to say positive things, to give compliments. Even if your words dont seem as if they make an impact at the time, they might do more good than youll ever know.A big part of positive messaging is also saying thanks to those who deserve it. Such as a former teacher, or coach, or band instructor, or boss, or other such mentor. Or a parent, of course. Dont wait until its too late to say, You really helped me, and I appreciate it.5. Fight against Alzheimers diseaseObviously, there are countless great causes to donate to. But if you are looking to honor Summitt specifically, consider donating to her foundation and/or another organization that is trying to find a cure for the wretched disease that took her.It was the toughest, most horrifically unfair opponent of her life. But she lived her last few years with the courage needed to face it head-on and inspire others to continue the battle after she was gone.Summitt did absolutely everything she could do to defeat this foe, which has affected so many people. Its up to everyone else to keep the fight going. One day, her record symbolically will be 1,099 victories -- with the last tally coming from the cure that will be found in part thanks to her.
