NORMAN, Okla. -- Samaje Perine is set to surpass all the great Oklahoma running backs and claim the schools career rushing mark.Billy Sims record of 4,118 yards has stood since 1979. Perine ranks fifth in Oklahoma history behind Sims, Joe Washington, Adrian Peterson and Steve Owens, but he needs just 83 yards to reach the top. Sims won the Heisman in 1978, Washington and Peterson were All-Americans who finished high in the Heisman voting and Owens won the Heisman in 1969. Perine already has passed Quentin Griffin, DeMarco Murray, 1952 Heisman winner Billy Vessels and Greg Pruitt, among others.Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley wants to see Perine break the record when the seventh-ranked Sooners face No. 17 Auburn in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 .It would mean something, Riley said. Its not why we do it and its not why were going there, but hes (Perine) such a special guy -- a special guy to me. Its obviously a very historic record.Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Dede Westbrook were Heisman finalists this year, but no one did more damage the final three games than Perine, a 235-pound bruiser with breakaway speed. After his 37-carry, 239-yard performance against Oklahoma State that clinched the Big 12 for the Sooners put him within striking distance of Sims, he said the record wasnt a concern.I havent thought about that since we started the season, Perine said. Thats really not what I play for. I just go out and do whatever I can to help my team win.Perine burst onto the scene with 1,713 yards rushing his freshman year, the sixth-best total in school history, and 21 touchdowns. He ran for a FBS-record 427 yards against Kansas that season, a record that still stands. As a sophomore, he added 1,349 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has rushed for 974 yards and 11 touchdowns this year, despite missing two games and most of a third with an injury. This season, Perine ran for 214 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Texas and was among the Big 12s top rushers before pulling a muscle in his right leg the next week against Kansas State. He missed the next two games, against Texas Tech and Iowa State. He returned against Baylor to run for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-24 victory . He followed with 31 carries for 160 yards against West Virginia in a 56-28 win , then finished the regular season with the outburst against Oklahoma State.Perine could have added a late touchdown against Oklahoma State, but he took a knee near the goal line to help the clock run out in Oklahomas 38-20 win.I mean, whats the point of scoring? Perine said. Were already up by two touchdowns. Theres only a few seconds left, so theres really no need to run up the score, so I just did what I thought was the right thing to do.Hes done all this damage while splitting time with Joe Mixon, a strong NFL prospect, the past two years. Typically, Perine punishes opponents most late in the season and late in games. Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said Perines damage has helped him.Hes helped our defense more than anybody, probably, he said. The ability to run the football and run games out, for us, was huge. We didnt have a defense that was built to stay on the field long periods of time.Stoops is glad Perine is on his side.To see somebody run -- thats disheartening to any defense when a guy, you know hes going to run it, and they still run it, he said. The whole fourth quarter of the game (against Oklahoma State), I mean, he just ran it and ran it and ran it, and theres nothing they can do. ---Follow Cliff Brunt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/CliffBruntAP . RIO DE JANEIRO -- The bullet which flew through the roof of a media tent at the Olympic Equestrian Center on Saturday was just an unfortunate incident, Brazilian military and police said. There was a scare during the lunch break at the eventing dressage on the first day of the games as a military-looking bullet pierced the roof of the tent and landed on the floor. The competition was not disrupted and nobody was hurt.Authorities are investigating: the type of bullet, the distance, where it comes from, why it comes here, organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada said. The first information that we got is that they can clearly determine this area was not the target, it was a stray bullet. They can confirm it has nothing to do with the games but they cannot be more precise at the moment. The bullet landed close to one of the media tables at the end of the room where news conferences are held, leaving a clear hole in the roof.Obviously this is a worrying situation and is not an incident we can take lightly as the safety of everyone at our venue -- athletes, horses, media and spectators -- is of prime importance, FEI president Ingmar De Vos said in a statement. The Rio 2016 organizing committee have told us that the three authorities involved in security in Brazil, the military, civil police and national guard, have stated categorically that our venue was not the target, and that this incident has nothing to do with the games.Andrada refused to speculate on where the bullet could have been fired from but said the entire competition venue is situated on military land.As soon as we have information we will disclose that, especially where it comes from, why it got here and what kind of bullet it was, Andrada added.dddddddddddd. In the meantime, all the authorities have assured us that they have reinforced security around this area.More than one source in the different security areas have emphasized that they have 100 percent assurance that it has nothing to do with the games and with the presence of the Olympic family and the press in this area. The incident came shortly after bomb-disposal experts blew up an unattended bag near the finish line of the mens road cycling race.We have to react to a global worry, Andrada said. Were not living in an easy moment so the authorities opted for the safe side. In a way its good that they opt for the safe side, independently to the fact that this generates tension on the communication front. Wed rather have the security in perfect shape than the communications.I understand it was a backpack that someone forgot. In the arena, William Fox-Pitt leads after the first day of the eventing competition, just 10 months after being put into an induced coma following a fall.Fox-Pitt, who only returned to competitive action in early April, rode Chilli Morning to a score of 37.Christopher Burton of Australia and Santano II are second, 0.6 penalties behind the Briton, with reigning Olympic individual champion Michael Jung third with 40.9 aboard Sam FBW.Germany, which is bidding for a third straight Olympic title, leads the team competition, with Australia second and Britain third.
