BEREA, Ohio -- Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kesslers chest and ribs still hurt when he throws, but hes determined to ignore the pain and play Sunday at Tennessee. It wont be up to him.Kessler practiced Wednesday and didnt appear to be bothered by his injuries during the period of practice open to the media. Also, veteran Josh McCown practiced for the first time since breaking his left collarbone in Week 2 and had plenty of zip on his passes.Afterward, coach Hue Jackson said its too early to pick a starter for the Titans.Obviously, Cody right now is the starter of our football team until I feel otherwise, Jackson said. We have to make decisions about where they are toward the end of the week. We will see that as we go.Kessler got hurt in Sundays loss against New England when he was clobbered by blitzing Patriots linebacker Donta Hightower in the first quarter. Kessler said his shoulder made a crunching sound when the he hit the turf and he was worried he was seriously injured. However, with a few days to rest and some rehab, the third-round draft pick, who has been steadily improving with each start, said hes feeling much better. It is still pretty painful, Kessler said before practice. But it has gotten progressively better each day, which is a positive. My mindset is (Ill be able to start). But it is hard to say with the game being a couple days away. The Browns have been ravaged by injuries, especially at quarterback. Robert Griffin III broke a bone in his left shoulder in the opener and remains sidelined; McCown broke his collarbone the following week; and Kessler went down on Sunday, forcing the Browns to bring in Charlie Whitehurst, who injured his left knee in the final minutes. Whitehurst reached an injury settlement with the team on Tuesday and was released.Cleveland signed Kevin Hogan from the practice squad to the active roster and he took reps during individual drills with the other quarterbacks, including wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, the former Ohio State and Oakland QB who has been used in shotgun formations and emergencies.Jackson said its unlikely he would wait until Sunday before announcing his starter.Im not about that, he said. It is important for our team know who the quarterback is. When you are coming off injuries like that, you just kind of have to see where everybody is. After practice is normally when things start to on their bodies either break down or get better. We will get a feel for where they are after today and into tomorrow. If things werent bad enough for the Browns (0-5), starting left guard Joel Bitonio sprained his foot Sunday and the team said he will be out for an extended period of time. The third-year lineman is having another solid season and losing him only complicates matters for a team with little depth. We know he is going to miss some time, obviously, but nothing has been totally decided, Jackson said. That is a tough blow to our team, but it is next man up. Nothing we can do about that. Those things happen in football. It is unfortunate. We have had a lot. That is well documented, but that is part of this deal. We are just grateful, the whole team, the guys that are left standing for the opportunity to come out here and keep practicing and keep getting better.Jackson said the teams sports science staff is perplexed by the unusual outbreak of injuries.Yeah, it is really amazing because when you look at the things that have happened, it is not like there are torn ACLs or any of that stuff or a play happened where somebody just got crushed, he said, knocking on the wooden dais. What is a coracoid bone? What is that? Im serious. For me, what are all these things? But it is happening. Our sports medicine staff is just as surprised as we are -- understand it, but surprised. We have to do everything we can to get these guys back. Our practice fields are good, our process is good, how we work and the strength and conditioning staff is great. We have just had some unfortunate luck. It is part of it. We are going to deal with it. We are not going to bury our head in the sand about it.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLBob Cousy Celtics Jersey . LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues know one of the biggest things missing in their games so far this season has been the ugly goals, the rebounds and deflections that come from putting a lot of traffic in front of the net. They finally were able to score some of those goals in a 4-1 win over Buffalo on Tuesday, and they hope they can do it again on Thursday night when they host the San Jose Sharks. It will be the first contest between the two teams since the Sharks eliminated the Blues in six games in the Western Conference final in May.Thats always the goal, left winger Jaden Schwartz said of scoring ugly goals. I think we needed to be better with the puck everywhere, especially through the neutral zone and tighten up defensively a little bit and check for our chances a little more. I thought we did a good job, I thought we created a lot of turnovers on the forecheck that allowed us to get a lot of O-zone time.Neither right winger Alexander Steen nor right winger Vladimir Tarasenko participated in the Blues practice on Wednesday. Steen had to leave Tuesday nights game after a hard check into the boards, and Tarasenko also was banged up in the contest.Coach Ken Hitchcock called it a maintenance day for both players.Hopefully well have both of them in the lineup fresh and ready to go, Hitchcock said. (Tarasenko) needed a maintenance day. Both guys needed it. We decided to switch it up aand have a full practice today and it wouldnt have done them any good so, well get them ready for tomorrow.dddddddddddd. Both guys. The Sharks suffered a 1-0 loss at Carolina on Tuesday night, with coach Peter DeBoer saying the team did not generate enough scoring chances. You have to put pucks in good places and then you have to win battles, and we didnt do enough of either, DeBoer said.DeBoer tried to shake up his forward lines in the third period and it is possible they could go with different combinations against the Blues.I dont think anyone up front was generating much, center Logan Couture told the San Jose Mercury-News. When thats the case, coach usually tries to get a spark somehow and he certainly has the right to do that. The Blues have made a lot of changes since they lost played the Sharks, with captain David Backes signing with Boston as a free agent, Troy Brouwer joining Calgary and Brian Elliott shuffled to the Flames, but the players who remain will be motivated for the game.Theyre still one of the teams we have to worry about in this conference, defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. They didnt lose many guys from last year and have a very solid forward group. Im sure theres going to be a little bit of a bad taste in our mouth from last year. ' ' '
