Big games for sure. But must-wins? Far from it.If No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Ohio State are going to lose this season, this would be an excellent week to do so.During the brief history of the College Football Playoff, only two teams -- one each season -- have entered the semifinals unbeaten. So chances are, all the teams that look primed to make a playoff run, like the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes, will take a loss at some point. But heres the key for those contenders: Dont lose to a division rival, which could cost a chance to win the conference.Thats why this week is not a terrible to time for Alabama and Ohio State to stumble. Both are playing cross-division rivals on the road. The Tide go to No. 9 Tennessee and the Buckeyes are at No. 8 Wisconsin. Neither favorite would relinquish control of their division if they lost. The Tide could still roll through the SEC West and to Atlanta for the conference championship game. The Buckeyes could still go through Michigan to win the Big Ten East and move on to Indianapolis to play for a title.Last season, Ohio States only loss -- to East Division rival Michigan State -- kept the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten championship and the playoff. Alabama almost got itself into the same position by losing to Mississippi early in the season, but Florida and Arkansas gave the Tide the help it needed to win the conference by defeating the Rebels. So, Tide and Buckeyes fans, dont sweat Saturday. The picks:FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTSDuke (plus 35+) at No. 7 LouisvilleAnother Friday night of Lamar Action Jackson and the Cardinals ... Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley says luckless forward Jamie Elliott is making solid progress in his recovery from back surgery and is well-placed to join in the Pies pre-season training program.Elliott was unable to take the field at all this season as he struggled with a pars defect injury in his back that was operated on in May.The 23-year-olds presence has been sorely missed in attack this year, but Buckley is optimistic he can return to his best in 2017.Hes going ok ... the surgery was obviously quite significant to put some support into a vertebrae, Buckley said. Its been a disappointing year for him no matter how you look at it.Right now hes been through hell and back for a young player who has really high aspirations about what he wants to be as a ffootballer and what he wants to provide to the club.ddddddddddddBut his progress has been positive, in particular, in the past month or so.Were pretty bullish about where he can get to. He will probably be in full training end of December or (early) January, but we have got plenty of time to graduate his load so that we can give him every chance of getting back to full fitness. The Pies have endured a tough run with injury this season, which has been a factor in their disappointing campaign.Dane Swan, Matt Scharenberg, Jackson Ramsay, Tom Langdon, Alex Fasolo and Tim Broomhead are among the players to suffer long-term injuries.
