HOUSTON -- When the Houston Astros suffered through a grueling offensive slump that bridged the final two games of July with the opening week of August, they hoped that the additions of Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel would eventually lengthen their lineup and correct their problems. The Astros scored a total of 18 runs while losing eight of 10 games before finding their footing in Minnesota on Aug. 9. On Saturday night, in their 6-2 win over the Rays, the Astros (68-61) showcased the balanced offense they sorely craved. In attacking Rays left-hander Blake Snell, the Astros banged out nine with him on the mound and closed the game with five starters recording multi-hit games. By spreading hits up and down their lineup, the Astros overwhelmed Snell and set the stage for a series sweep on Sunday. Its a weird discipline to ask out of your hitters to be ready to hit on every pitch but dont swing at everything, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. I thought we did a really good job tonight of making (Snell) get his breaking ball over. We didnt chase any breaking balls in the dirt or not very many of them. The changeup was really very effective early on for him but we hit his fastball, and then the second time through we hit his changeup. I like how our guys stayed very focused in the strike zone.Right-hander Doug Fister (12-8, 3.59 ERA) will take the hill for Houston coming off his best start of the season. On Monday against the Pirates, Fister worked seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a 3-1 win. He did not face the Rays when the teams squared off in Tampa Bay in mid-June, but Fister is 2-4 with a 3.63 ERA over seven career appearances (six starts) against them.Right-hander Chris Archer (7-17, 4.11 ERA) will get the start for the Rays (54-74), seeking to continue his exceptional pitching against the Astros.Archer is 3-2 with a 1.31 ERA in six career starts against the Astros. Two of his three career shutouts have come against Houston, including a one-hitter on Aug. 20, 2015 at Minute Maid Park and a five-hit shutout at Tropicana Field on July 14, 2013.The road shutout against the Astros came in his previous appearance in Houston, a 1-0 win over right-hander Collin McHugh in which Archer threw just 98 pitches. In that start, Archer became the first American League pitcher to throw a one-hit shutout with 10-plus strikeouts and less than 100 pitches since Yankees right-hander David Cone twirled a perfect game against the Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999.The Rays will need Archer to pitch effectively and efficiently. They lost Snell to an injury one batter into the fourth inning on Saturday, forcing manager Kevin Cash to dip into his bullpen earlier than he expected. Its unfortunate because Kevin Jepsen really shouldnt have been pitching, Cash said. Now, tonight was injury-related, and (Danny) Farquhar comes in and gives us two innings. The bullpen is getting taxed a little bit. We need to straighten that out. CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox, two teams at opposite ends of the American League Central Division spectrum, will meet Wednesday night in the second game of their three-game series. The Indians are in first place in the division with a record of 68-49. The White Sox are in fourth place, 12 1/2 games behind Cleveland, with a record of 56-62.Cleveland won the first game of the series Tuesday night, a 3-1 decision, in which Cleveland had outstanding pitching, timely hitting, and outstanding defense. The White Sox had outstanding starting pitching from Jose Quintana, but that was about it. The difference between the two teams is significant. Just ask White Sox manager Robin Ventura.Youre looking at a team that can pitch, obviously, Ventura said. Offensively they can do a lot of different things. They are athletic. They have some switch hitters. They are really tough, and they can match up against lefties or righties. The White Sox will recall Anthony Ranaudo from Triple-A Charlotte to start Wednesday nights game. In 16 starts at Charlotte, Ranaudo was 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA. He has made one start for the White Sox this year. That came on July 27, an 8-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. In that start Ranaudo pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits, with three strikeouts and four walks. He also hit a home run in that game, but obviously wont get to hit against the Indians.Cleveland will send Carlos Carrasco (8-6, 3.21) to the mound. It will be Carrascos 15th career start vs. the White Sox, hiis 16th appearance against the Sox overall.dddddddddddd His career record against Chicago is 3-8 with a 5.45 ERA. He has made one start against the White Sox this year. In a 3-2 Cleveland win on June 19 at Progressive Field, Carrasco pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks, but did not figure in the decision. The Indians right now are hitting on all cylinders. Wednesdays game will be the seventh in an 11-game homestand, the teams longest homestand of the year. In the first six games of the homestand, the Indians are 5-1. Theyve increased their lead in the division over second-place Detroit to six games. One of the keys has been their revamped bullpen. The addition of left-hander Andrew Miller in a trade deadline deal with the Yankees has paid immediate dividends. In the Indians 3-1 win over the White Sox on Tuesday, Miller pitched the seventh and eighth innings and retired all six batters he faced, on five groundouts and one strikeout. He threw just 16 pitches, 12 of them strikes. In seven appearances since being acquired in that trade with the Yankees, Miller has held opposing batters to a .103 batting average (3-for-29). Its one thing to have his stuff, which is really good, said manager Terry Francona. But he doesnt mess around. He just keeps firing strikes. In a combined 51 appearances with the Indians and Yankees, Miller is 6-1 with a 1.50 ERA. ' ' '
